Old Dogs and New tricks...

I had to take a picture for proof.  This was two nights ago, the same day Shadow bit Vegas while trying to get him to roughhouse with her.  We thought Vegas might deny lying with little Shadow, had we not had the camera for proof.  We were hopeful that the silly old man was having a little warming in the cold shoulder he has been giving the new puppy.
Old Man Vegas, as we call him, lots two of his girls in six months.  Not only were we humans sad and missing Remington and Hopper Spark, who had died of illnesses this last year, but Vegas was clearly sad, too.  And when Shadow came home, he was clearly not happy about it.

Then, yesterday I was out working on te seemingly never ending garden enclosure project, with Shadow around my feet.  She was exploring or chasing things, then coming back, and getting herself in trouble scaring chickens and barking at goats from the safety of the garden, but getting in trouble with me. ( Bringing home a five month old means that she is ready for a good bit of her training, but didn't grow up here to know what is normal and what is barkable/ defensible.)

Shadow had wandered off, and was chasing lizards under the trampoline a few yards away, when Vegas stood up on the porch and began to bark.  I looked up and asked him what was wrong, and he barked a little longer, then went bunding off the porch to where Shadow was.  He proceeded to chase the lizard with her, almost showing her how it was done.  Then they spent almost an hour together, with him showing her how to dig his favorite spots chasing the little speed demons.  They now shared a past time!

Over the course of yesterday, Vegas and Shadow barked at the dogs next door (the biggest Rottweiler had been leering at their goats), they ate side by side, and they fussed over who stood closer to get their ears scratched.  The cold war might be warming!  I think they are starting to become friends.  Little Shadow has a LOT of training left, but she is a sweetheart, and she idolizes silly Vegas.  And she is bringing some energy and life back into the old goofball.  Deep sigh of relief on both accounts.

Well, I have some storm damage to work on before the town run for today.  I had best get to it!
