Days of our Buckeyes... part three

Another day, another round of chasing that pretty little birchen until Junior gets mad, hoping to get the attention of Mahogany.  Really, another fail. Epic fail, actually.  Especially when I got side tracked and caught the attention of the farm puppy.

The farm puppy, Shadow Paws, is a shadow only in her color and how fast she moves.  She likes to run around, chasing lizards and keeping the predators away. By predators, I mean the hawks and owls and neighborhood cats who want to sneak in and hurt us.  The mama lady says she is still al puppy, and she means well. She usually says this when Shadow is in trouble for chasing us on her little energy crazies.
So there I was, feeling frustrated and annoyed, with Mahogany barely even peeking at me from her nesting area, when I decided to wander over to have a snack by the goose house. A snack in the shade of the mesquite trees would do me good, I thought. And it couldn't hurt to do it with my back to Mahogany, ignoring her with my majestic tail feathers.

The geese wandered by. The “goosies on the loosies” and the mama lady calls them. Really, that lady baby talks to all of us- crazy.  They like to wander around, stirring up trouble in the pens.  They seem to know enough not to pick on the people, just to get the other animals riled up.  I figured it couldn't hurt to get them on my side before they got that annoying Buckeye roo, TallBoy, going.  That should make me look like a good guy, the adventurous kind.

Then, as I was wander along with them, trying to look adventurous and proud of being out again, Shadow snuck up to play with the geese. She likes to see how close she can get before the geese get mad and begin to hiss at her, with the gander spreading his wings and doing his angry dance.

That is usually followed by Shadow going swimming in their water tank, just to be silly and bug them, before running aff to chase the lizards or find her boy, who also happens to be our caretaker.

But today, the gander did his angry dance a little extra long, and just as I was feeling Mahogany’s eyes on me, Shadow jumped in the water tank.  Feeling all excited and refreshed she decided to play chase- right after me, right in from of Mahogany.  And was I cool and turned to tell her off like the gander?

No.

I panicked.

I really panicked.

And I don’t even mean flying up to the branch above the buck pen and harassing Shadow from there panicked.

I mean full out run across the yard- in full view of Mahogany- with Shadow hot on my heels panicked.
Straight into the caretaker boy, Wyatt.

So there, right in front of Mahogany, Wyatt picked me up and tucked me under his arm, scolding Shadow about scaring the “poor chicken”.

“Poor chicken?” Ugh! Could anything be less brave and stately?

If that wasn't enough, Wyatt took me to the big pen, and put me in the open pen to relax.  When the mama lady got home, she told him no to get me out of that no mans land, and put me back with the Buckeyes, since she had worked on the gate again.  So just as I was going to get my chance to win back Mahogany, Wyatt had the goofy Brahma roo, Speckles 2, herd me into the big pen.  Then he told me to get comfortable, because at least these chickens were all mellow and nice.

Back to trying to figure out how to get Mahogany's attention. But now, from across a much longer distance...
