A beautiful Tuesday morning... with babies!

It is a beautiful morning of blue skies and warm sun.  Not sure why it had to get quite so hot later, but that is Arizona!
I went out to do a walk around with the kids this morning, and saw Miss Liberty hiding in the tractor tire sandbox getting ready to leave an egg behind.  She has been leaving a pretty green egg here most days lately.

This mama made her first appearance with babies today.  She is a beautiful Phoenix, with three babies.  They were adorable running around me as I tried to water the greenhouse!

This is the goofy mama who has been raising babies in the doe barn.  Strange choice, I know.  This pen seems to be her spot for teaching them to run around.  She chased Bailey out of it when she was trying to clean yesterday.

Here is Blondie.  A week ago, she decided it was time to get serious about having babies like the others, and has been broody!  Her roo is taking her protection very seriously.  Got the outside of her pen clean, but it looks like it will take a few of us to her her house done, and she is so touchy about not sitting on her eggs if things are moved.  Ugh.  She is funny!

These are the other two mama, with their babies running in and out of the frame.

Below is an Ameraucauna in the big hen house.  She was mad that I had Wyatt pick her up for a quick health check, and he wanted her to lay back down, but she wanted to tell us off!  Fussy, fussy...

Well, things are never dull around here.  But I guess we like it that way!  So we are enjoying have babies around, and getting things set up now that the kids are on Summer break.  Have a great day, a beautiful week, and hope to see you at the farmer's market!

A Best Bud...

I don't spend much time on introductions, though I really should.  In this case, it is the personality coming out in her latter years that brings more laughter to the silly dog who has been with us for over ten years now.  This is Hopper Spark.  She was hit by a car out on the reservation right after I began working there, and she ended up with us while we tried to nurse her back to health.  Whether I simply could not find her rightful owner, or being new out there, looked in all the wrong places, Hopper is still here with us.

When she came home, we had to reset her growing front leg each day after she continually chewed off the bandages.  When I first brought her in, and sat her in the floor to begin pulling off ticks and watching her for shock, I told Callie Jo and Vegas that she was hurt, and just a visitor, and that we would care for her until she went to her home.  The other two helped me look after her, and until Hopper tried to usurp Callie's place with Charlie, there were no cross words between the three.

Once Hopper could get up on her casts, she tried to follow Bailey through the house, wanting to be a kid dog.  She never once chewed on the house, or poddied in it.  Which was good, because Charlie had NOT authorized this new addition.  He was away, and busy in the wake of 9/11, and I was pregnant.  After Wyatt was born, and Hopper was seemingly not very temporary, Callie Jo let Hopper know that Wyatt was hers.  Odd how it works that way, but I could not have found a better best friend for Wyatt Clay.

As Wyatt grew, he went through a time during Charlie's travels for the military in which he stuttered, then did not speak, then slowly began to speak again.  Through it all, his best friend, the one who he would come home and sit with, cuddle with, and first began to talk to again, was Hopper Spark.  According to her, the boy can do no wrong.  He nearly smothered her with hugs, worrie dover her when she got valley fever, wandered the property with her side by side.  If I come home during the day while he is at school, she follows me around grunting at me that I am a bad mama who left Hopper's kid somewhere.

After Wyatt spent a year feeding and giving the neds to the dogs (under supervision, of course), he earned his first chickens.  Hopper wander with him through feedings.  One of her vices- she likes to sneak eggs.  She will gladly steal a favorite nesting spot from a hen if it looks comfy, and knows all the latest hiding spots for eggs.  We have learned to try to remain a step ahead of her!

Aside from snatch the eggs, Hopper's favorite past times are sleeping on all the dog beds stacked together (or falling off them), and hiding shoes.  Some dogs play fetch, Hopper Spark steals the chore shoes from the shelves by the back door, and hides them around the property, with special attention paid to Charlie's- those are filled almost completely with dirt.  When Charlie comes home, she wags her tail at him until he begins walking around finding the shoes, walking behind him wagging her tail.

They have now taken to calling it their game, and I am beginning to think that, as much as we all miss Remington, Charlie is coming to look forward to their little ritual in the game they play while the kids feed their animals and I tend to my greehouse and garden each evening.  Despite the leg that never healed quite right, and her  ongoing health issues, Hopper is still going strong as she gets ready to turn eleven.  She snores loudly, and knocks things with her thumping tail.  And she might not play fetch, but she is training Charlie to.  Gotta love it, and I still couldn't have picked a better best friend for Wyatt Clay.  Thanks again, Callie Jo, and Karma, too.

A Tiny Ambassador

In a hectic schedule, it can be challenging to reach out to others, do the chores and homework, and keep everything rolling.  This is finals week for both Bailey and I, and Wyatt is finishing off his semester, too.  One thing about finals week, though, far fewer after school requirements at the school.  That is good, as it gives us time to get the chores and homework in a little earlier.  With our commute, sleep tends to suffer a good bit.  But today, be rearranged our schedule a bit, shoved the allergy shot off until tomorrow, and added a mission as ambassadors to our day.

Ambassadors?  Okay, one in particular.  My Aunt lives in an assisted living place not far from the school.  One would think we would see her all the time.  I get by as often as I can.  But a 37 year old niece isn't near as fun a visitor as the kids, and last year she got visits from baby Nathan, a pygmy goat that had to go to town with me while he was being bottle fed and I was managing the constant running around my work schedule.  She still talks about how sweet he is!  And how tiny he was, and how he cuddled up to her and just looked at her...

Today, Charlie took the kids to school so I could work on Chemistry in peace.  Wish I could say I was terribly productive.  At about 2:00, I sent the work I had done to my professor in pdf asking for help and began loading up to head for town.  The rain had lightened and this was likely the only chance I would have to let her visit one of the new babies before they were too big, so I brought Olympia with me.

She settled down in the car, only periodically fluffing her towels,
We got to the school, and I wasn't leaving little Olympia in the car by herself, so I took off with her in a towel, trying to find Wyatt Clay in the rainy day release.  He wanted to introduce her to Mrs Reid, his teacher, who came out to say hi.  So sweet, the way the teachers take interest in what these two love so much.  Then we set off to find Bailey.  Olympia and Bailey and Wyatt made a quick round of the schoolteachers at the High School, being called a sheep, a dog, a fainting goat(nope perfectly awake), a dog and lots of other things.  The kids and teachers alike cooed over little Olympia, laughing when she maaed at them.  We said goodbye to Bailey's best friend Kathleen, then piled into the car for a quick hop across the road.
The kids headed in with big smiles for a quick visit...

Auntie was so excited about the kids coming to visit, she almost missed little Olympia.  Sharon, who was on duty, was excited too.  She grew up with goats.  She asked Aunt Leanna to bring her into the dining room where others were playing games.

The ladies had the owners' dog with them.  Teddy didn't know what to make of Olympia, but Olympia thinks dogs exist as her friends, to snuggle up to and be watched over by, so it didn't both her any.  The cameras were busy, everyone was excited and smiling!

Half way home, Wyatt asked if Olympia could ride in his lap.  He quickly passed out with Olympia tucked next to his hip.  She set her chin on his hip and rode home.  Her Mama Glory and brother Fly By Night were even more excited to see her than Aunt Leanna!  It was a great visit, and our little ambassador did a great job cuddling and making people feel great!

Final set of photos from right after kidding

The doeling and buckling ready for a little rest.

No names yet!

We should see their personalities today- springloaded to be sure!

Quick set of biostats, then back to Mama Glory!

Mama, see me?

Third installments of Glory's Kids

Another round of photos...
Hi Mama, I am done wandering- it is cold!

Hungry...

Cuddling up
And the little ones laying together...

More photos of Glory's little ones

Despite the cold, the buckling and doeling are still doing well this morning!  These are still photos from last night.
Hard to see this one around Glory's leg, but she is sweet, and the more shy of the two.  She looks a little more like her Daddy.

These kids are sired by Huey- and oh so cute!

Hey, mama, what are you eating?  Can I have that?

Welcome to our world

Well, she waited until the first freeze, and Glory blessed us all with two kids just before midnight.  One more silvery one (the buckling), and a slightly darker one(the doeling).

Both little ones are nursing well, the more silvery one is seeming more adventurous fromt the start.

Glory is a good little Mama, it will be fun to watch these grow!

Dear Diary, Valentine's Day Post 2011

Happy Valentine's Day to everyone!

It is Monday, and here  am at the craft store.  Charlie came home a week ago, and we had a busy weekend as a family this weekend, after a busy week.  I guess this post will seem as much like a Dear Diary as anything else!

Last Monday, all of the Science Fair projects went in at the school.  Yay!  Over this year's process, I learned that Bailey Noelle doesn't like to experiment, she wants to research and find concrete answers.  Wyatt Clay, on the other hand, loves the mess and exploration of any experiment.  Working with a child with organizational issues who has a teacher who doesn't think girls can be scientists and doesn't really get into biology while my child has a heavy biology project makes me want to pull my hair out, and working with a child with processing problems requires me to be SEVERAL steps ahead of the teacher, as these projects are evil after farm chores and a 1.5 hour after school and after tutoring commute on a weekday!  Needless to say, I am on the growing list of Mamas who want to do science project over the summer break when he children can actually learn something from the endeavor.

So after all of that, football and basketball practice were thankfully light leading up to the championship playoffs for Bailey's team and the last regular season game for Wyatt's team.  Both kids are spending a lot of time in tutoring with their instructors, pulling things together that fell apart when all heck broke loose on the farm while Charlie was away the last time, and then they will begin working ahead in preparation for Pima County Fair.  So through the letdown, all three of us were sick.  Wyatt was the only one who ended up home from school, though.

Saturday we woke up slowly and took care of the animals before heading across town to Wyatt's football game.  Another win for the undefeated Outlaws!  Next up, playoffs!  That's Wyatt, by the way, holding off two kids on the back right.

After football, since we were on the East side, we went to the commissary and BX, then headed home to feed before heading out again, this ime to Science Dicovery Night!  When we got there, the Physics Factory was in full swing, and I hung ou in the field with Nathan (we had had no time to bottle feed so he came along) while Bailey and the boys went in.  There were some great experiments on display, and each classroom had something special going on.  Wyatt loved the robotics, but said the microscopes set up in Mr Ali's room were his favorite.

We got home late, enjoyed a special dessert Charlie had bought, and headed to bed. That didn't help me get up on time though, the dogs were VERY annoyed with it taking me clear to 7:30 to finally rise and shine!

I worked on my painting and greenhouse projects, Bailey worked on animals and homework, and the boys traded off four roosters when they went on the feed store run.  Funny how it never seems like we get enough done!  Charlie made a delicious dinner with grilled mushrooms and asparagus, and we gathered at the burn pile to make smores!

We were up rather late finishing Valentines off for classes- hope everything got there this morning!Wow, am I tired.  Oh, and here are some new photos of three week old Nathan- on second thought, maybe this post is long enough and he should get his own!  Have a wonderful Valentine's Day, hug someone special!
